Silver Trail

The Silver Trail offers visitors both an accessible historic front country and a spectacular wilderness backcountry. A rich history of mining for gold and silver can be seen not only in local museums, but also in the artifacts, mine implements, historic sites, buildings and other traces of a bygone era dotting the landscape. Further afield, rivers with names like the Wind, Snake and Bonnet Plume have made the Silver Trail a mecca for wilderness paddlers drawn to wild country and pristine rivers. Whatever your touring preferences, the region is full of rewarding experiences.

Binet House Interpretive Centre, Mayo

Mayo is located 50 km east of the North Klondike Highway along the Silver Trail. Historic Binet House is a visitor centre operated by the community. There, you will find interpretive displays, a gift shop and tourist information. The centre features extensive geological displays about permafrost, glacial history and mining in the Mayo District, plus historical photos, artifacts and exhibits about the Nacho Nyak Dun First Nation.

Keno City Mining Museum

The Keno City community's impressive museum features immaculate displays chronicling a century of gold and silver mining in the region. An impressive collection of old photographs offers a rare glimpse at life in a northern frontier mining town. Tools, equipment and memorabilia are also on display.

Keno City Alpine Interpretive Centre and Hiking Information

Adjacent to the Keno City museum is a new building dedicated to interpreting the region's natural history. Visitors to Keno enjoy unique access to alpine areas, including the drive up to the signpost on Keno Hill. Starting at the Interpretive Centre, you can learn about the ecology of the fragile alpine environment and find out about alpine wildflowers, birds, wildlife, and delicate butterflies with names like Cranberry Blue and Melissa Arctic. The centre also serves as a starting point to Keno's network of marked hiking trails.

Lakes

The lakes and rivers of the Yukon offer excellent fishing. Five Mile Lake is a pleasant place to enjoy the Silver Trail's renowned warm summer days. Five Mile is a well-known local swimming hole, where locals and travelers alike can enjoy a dip, an afternoon of picnicking and a trail walk around the lake.

Silver Trail Hiking Adventures

A network of marked trails surrounds Keno Hill. Hikers can pack a picnic, take some sunscreen, and spend time exploring the Silver Trail's sub-alpine habitat. Halfway between Mayo and Keno City, Mount Haldane (1,839 m) offers exceptional views of the area.

Signpost on Keno Hill

Located on the top of Keno Hill is the famous milepost noting distances to cities around the world, providing a unique photo opportunity, and a scenic view.

Keno City

In the 1920s, Keno City was a booming mining town. Today, this frontier town is home to fewer than 20 full-time residents who are true Yukon characters, artists and entrepreneurs. Visitors can explore a living ghost town full of surprises and stories.

Our Communities

Stewart Crossing

At the junction of the Klondike Highway and the Silver Trail you will find Stewart Crossing. This 40-person village is the gateway to the Silver Trail region. This settlement began as a supply post in 1886 and later became a roadhouse site on the Overland Trail from Whitehorse to Dawson City.

Mayo

Mayo is a busy village of 388 at the spot where the Stewart River joins the Mayo River. Formerly known as Mayo Landing, the town was established in the early 1900s as a river settlement and port for silver-lead shipments from the Keno mining district.

Keno City

Named after the popular gambling game, Keno City is now a rustic cluster of log structures, B&B cabins, a snack bar and a tavern. The tiny hamlet is home to 15: an eclectic mix of artists, miners and old timers. It has a range of attractions including a mining museum, downtown campground, gold panning, Alpine Interpretive Centre with hiking information and artist studios.
